First of all, what is a best friend? Is it your brother or sister? A cousin maybe? Your spouse? Someone not actually related but close enough? How long have you known your best friend, weeks, months, years, decades? Why do you call this person your best friend, and why the distinction?

According to urban dictionary:

Best Friends are very special people in your life. They are the first people you think about when you make plans. They are the first people you go to when you need someone to talk to. You will phone them up just to talk about nothing, or the most important things in your life. When you’re sad they will try their hardest to cheer you up. They give the best hugs in the world! They are the shoulder to cry on, because you know that they truly care about you. In most cases they would take a bullet for you, coz it would be too painful to watch you get hurt.

My best friend, Casi, is someone who has literally been there for me my entire life…. I was only days old when we met since our mom’s were best friends. She is 7 weeks older than me, and we have done so much together. She is basically my other sister. Casi has been on so many family vacations with us, camping trips, school functions, you name it, Casi was there. She is, in every sense of the word, my best friend.

Sure, Justin is also my best friend, that’s why I married the guy (well, and, you know, he’s also good-looking and I knew would make cute kids!). But it still is a different kind of best friend. And because of that, I also expect different things from each of them. Ok, expect is a strong word. But I do expect certain things to happen when I am with my best friend, and for her to do certain things for me as well. But it’s not what you think…. bear with me here.

Laughter

When I am with my best friend, I expect lots of laughter. If we can’t laugh with each other, or sometimes at each other, then what kind of friendship is it? There are so many negatives in today’s world, my best friend is a positive part of my life.

Memories

Oh the memories, and the stories. We have shared so much together, we can sit for hours and talk about fun memories we have shared, and it never gets old. We know each other’s secrets, we remember all the embarrassing moments as well as the amazing moments.

Ups and Downs

Of course, as with every relationship in life, our friendship can have it’s ups and downs. But in the end, she is still there for me, no matter what. We can have an argument, but if you mess with her, you better believe I will hurt you! Speaking of memories and arguments, I remember when we were really young, around 5ish, getting in a big argument over who got the stand on the top of the play structure to be Rafiki and hold up a stuffed Simba. Seriously, full on tantrum from both of us. I was at her house, so she should let the guest do it, but it was her house so she should get to. Guys, that was over 20 years ago, and guess what, still my best friend. That kind of thing, at that age, can ruin a friendship! But ours persisted way beyond our Rafiki days.

Boyfriends & Breakups

I don’t expect my best friend to always like my boyfriend, but I still always had her support. She may not have always agreed in my choice of boyfriends, and I may not have always agreed with hers, but through it all, we had each other. We helped each other through awkward first dates, told each other about our first kiss, and helped pick each other back up after a breakup. Significant others may come and go, but my best friend is always at my side.

Life Events

I can’t imagine going through some of my major life events without my best friend. When Justin proposed to me, Casi was one of the very first people I text. Really, we had just left and I was already sending her a text! And of course, she was a bridesmaid (would have been my Maid of Honor if I didn’t have a sister) so was there, standing up with me on one of the biggest days of my life. My other biggest days…. when my children were born. No, she wasn’t in the delivery room with me (that was my other best friend, my husband’s job), but she did come see me very soon after each of the boys was born. They call her Aunt Casi and she loves them just as if they were her nephews.

Easy

Being a best friend should not be work. I have had friendships that always seemed like work, and they didn’t last. Some a few weeks, some a few years even, but never as long as my friendship with my best friend. Now, I am not saying that you have to have been best friends forever to be considered a best friend, definitely not. But the friendship shouldn’t feel forced, or hard, or like you are working just to keep it in tact.

Mutual Understanding

We only live a few hours apart, but sometimes that means we can go months without seeing each other. We both have busy lives, and we know it. Neither of us has forgotten the other, or moved on. That’s just how life is as we get older. We saw each other almost every day in high school, but we lived a street away from each other, drove to school together, and had most of our classes together, then even lived together freshman year of college. We don’t have to see each other every day to know that we still care, that we are still there for each other. What matters is that when we do get together, it seems as if we were never apart.

All of this comes down to support. My best friend supports me, and is there for me, through good and bad, ups and downs. She is always a phone call away, and I know, without a doubt, if I need her, she is here, just as I would be for her too. Really, I don’t feel like this is expecting much from my best friend, this is more what a best friend should be, and what I will always be for her as well. I would rather have a few very good friends, than a lot of fair-weather friends any day.
